Metabolix's patent portfolio contains about 90 issued U.S. patents and about 40 more pending U.S. patents, as well as their foreign equivalents. The IP position is deep, broad, and comprehensive. It assures Metabolix freedom to practice in the manufacture, sale, and use of Mirels, and will deprive other parties of the use of economic organisms (either microbes or plants) to produce Mirels.

Most fundamentally, Metabolix owns the genes that encode the basic Mirel pathway, as well as the use of the genes, singly or in combination, for the preparation of Mirels. The company also owns important IP related to various preferred metabolic pathways for the production of Mirel copolymers of a variety of sorts. It owns several novel Mirel compositions.

In addition, the IP estate includes patents defining key aspects of Mirel isolation and purification, and subsequent processing. These patents have great practical significance. A variety of specific applications of Mirels are also protected.

Finally, Metabolix has developed a library of high-productivity, integrated microbial strains producing a range of Mirels through fermentation.
