Published Patent Application Describes Key Innovation from Yield10 Bioscience

Metabolix launched Yield10 Bioscience late last year as a way to resource our crop science activity separately from our specialty biopolymers business. Yield10 is focused on global food security, as food production must be increased by an estimated 70% in the next 35 years to feed the growing global population which is expected to increase from 7 to 9.6 billion by 2050. Recent studies show that traditional crop breeding is unlikely to solve this problem. Rather, our Yield10 team believes technologies which enable simultaneous changes in complex gene systems to achieve step changes in seed yield are required. New data from our lead yield technologies provide strong support for this view. Continue reading

Metabolix Awarded New Patents in 2015, Driving Innovation in PHAs

MBLX PatentMetabolix is continually innovating around our PHA biopolymers technology. In 2015, we were granted or allowed 23 patent applications, seven in the US and 16 internationally.

Two notable inventions covered under these patents recognize the key advancements the company has achieved in areas with significant commercial potential: Use of PHA as an additive for PLA in film applications, and a production process for making PHA latex commercially.

Use of PHA Materials in PVC Wood Polymer Composite Applications

Wood fiber polymer composites (WPC) are materials made by combining wood particles or other fibrous materials with polymer resins and additives to improve performance. These composites are used as alternatives to wood or plastic in a wide range of products such as decking, fences, railings and outdoor landscaping features because they require much less maintenance than solid wood. Nonwovens are used in numerous industries and is an area where sustainable biopolymers can be used to create materials with new functionality. “Nonwovens” are typically fabrics and sheets created by bonding together entangled fiber or filaments. These products are typically produced from oil-based raw materials and have numerous applications in the medical, construction, personal care and filtration industries. Nonwoven materials are typically created mechanically, thermally or chemically and can be made into a broad range of products such as agricultural coverings, fabrics, apparel linings, carpeting, diapers, wipes, filtration media, insulation, roofing and medical products.
